Addressing Educational & Community Gaps
What began as a small guys’ group at a local school inspired me to better understand the issues at hand. We set out to better understand some of the factors that are negatively impacting the youth and young adults. What we found was those young people who are considered “at-risk” and “marginalized” face many barriers to achieving their full potential. Factors such as poverty, mobility, substance abuse, school disengagement, and mental health issues constitute some of the barriers impeding the success of our youth.
In early 2018 while working as an onsite coordinator at a local school, Jaafar Abdullah realized the need for mentorship and career/entrepreneurship-based programming opportunities, particularly for young males.
Mr. Abdullah began volunteering at detention centers, community centers, and alternative schools to have “fierce dialogue.” We discussed things such as purpose statements, students spoke candidly about their needs & wants in the schools and community, and we discussed goal setting and held accountability circles.
